Castor+Pollux is a shop and gallery located on Brighton seafront. It sells a colourful selection of illustration-led prints, books and stationery, as well as selected pieces of jewellery, glass and pottery. Designers showcased in the shop include Jonathan Adler, Tatty Devine, Rob Ryan, Jonny Hannah, Mini Moderns and Moma. We interviewed owner, Mike Levy, about the shop and its continuing success.

When did the shop open?
We opened in 2001.
What is your inspiration behind the shop?
East Village, New York on a spring afternoon.
Why did you choose to open in Brighton?
I used to run the pottery at Camden Lock and wanted an equally interesting clientele, so I came here.
Where do you see the shop in five years time?
Still here (hopefully).
What is the best compliment you’ve been given about Castor+Pollux?
Everyone tells me it’s their favourite shop. That’s good enough for me.
How do you choose what to stock?
Built-in good taste.
What has been your proudest moment since opening?
The Charley Harper show opening. It looked great and went down really well with everyone who came to the show.

What does the name mean?
Castor and Pollux are the Gemini twins, and Roman Gods of seafarers. They are also Helen of Troy’s brothers.
